4 DAYS BAGAMOYO

Bagamoyo

Bagamoyo played various historical roles in Tanzania. Apart from being a slave and ivory port, it was used as a German headquarters during 1890s. Renowned explorers like Burton, Speke, Grant, Livingston, and Stanley have all made their mark in this town. Bagamoyo comes from a Swahili phrase “Bwaga Moyo” which translates to Throw down your heart” in English. This is a despair expression expressed by slaves when they realize that they face a long uncertain future after being held captive. From Dar, it lies 75 kilometers north.

The Bagamoyo Church: This church was constructed in 1868 and thought of to be the first church of its kind in East Coast of Africa. There is a cemetery which was built in 1876 by freed slaves and contains the burial of early missionaries along a small shrine. In between the years of 1934 and 1991, 35 Dutch priests worked here, the last of which was Father Frits Versteijne who stayed at this place for over 30 years. He also started the first museum in the old Fathers’ House in March 1968.

The second Fathers’ House in Bagamoyo, constructed close to the Mother of all Churches in East Africa, has also fallen victim to the corrosive effects of the coast region’s relentlessly humid climate. The ground floor, first floor, and second floor were built in 1873, 1877, and 1903 respectively.
